Patient Rights

Did you know you have important rights as a client in therapy? Your well-being, privacy, and autonomy are protected throughout the entire therapeutic process. During our first session, I will review these rights with you in detail so you feel informed, empowered, and comfortable moving forward.

Below is a brief overview of those rights, offered to help you understand what to expect and how your care is supported.

Your Rights

You have the right to privacy and confidentiality in therapy. However, there are specific legal exceptions.

As a mandated reporter, I am required to report any suspected child abuse, elder abuse, abuse involving individuals with disabilities, or animal abuse. I am also legally obligated to respond to a court subpoena requesting client information.

If you share that you intend to harm yourself or someone else, I must notify the appropriate authorities—this may include contacting the police and, when appropriate, a family member—to ensure safety.

You also have the right to ask questions about your treatment, participate in creating your therapy goals, and make decisions about the direction of your care. You may end therapy at any time, though I encourage scheduling a final session for proper closure and support.

Please be aware that insurance companies require a diagnosis and may request information about your treatment. If you prefer complete confidentiality, choosing to pay privately may be the best option.
